Sunflower Acres is a first-generation garden center and farm, owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Josh and Crystal Cady. The family business itself has just begun, but the dream to build a destination garden center and farm in Oregon began many years ago.

Crystal grew up next door to one of Oregon’s top retail garden centers in Portland, Oregon. As a young girl, she got off the school bus and headed straight to the garden center to explore flowers, trees, garden supplies, and gift décor. She began to ‘help’ by boxing pansies for customers and learning to make bows and wreaths from the staff. Money she earned from babysitting was spent on annual color and containers, mini water gardens, and favorite items from the gift shop. The owner promised that, when she turned 15, Crystal had a job there. From the day she turned 15 and started that job, Crystal knew her dream was to own a retail garden center.

From those beginnings at the local garden center, to years at one of Oregon’s largest garden centers, volunteer work in the industry, and earning her degree, Crystal’s knowledge, experience and passion have led to building a new, innovative garden center.

In spring 2012, Crystal and husband Josh launched Sunflower Acres Farm & Garden, first offering their locally-grown hanging baskets and garden plants at farmers markets in Salem and Independence, Oregon.

About Josh and Crystal Cady:

Crystal and Josh in Booth

As passionate about each other as they are about people and plants, Crystal and Josh met while earning their horticulture degrees at Oregon State University. Crystal was focused on the plant side of the industry, and Josh focused on the turf side. Their adventures in life took them to Central Oregon and back, while growing gardens and a plethora of container plants no matter where they went. In early 2008, they truly jumped into farming when they purchased one acre of land in the Willamette Valley.

Josh grew up in a family of farmers—his grandpa was a farmer and craftsman who tended 13 acres in Marion County, 1950-1980, among the first to farm Marionberries.  From that heritage, Josh and Crystal are cultivating their dream of a family farm and garden center, inspiring the family business where they work today!
